WILL NEWMAN ACCEPTS LAMAAA PRESIDENCY FOR 2006-2007

Will Newman, the outgoing Chairman of the Education Committee, has just been elected and accepted the position of President for fiscal year 2006-2007. The complete set of new officers will be announced soon.

Let us all welcome Will and wish him the best on his new endeavor.

2006 ANNUAL CONFERENCE A STUNNING SUCCESS

The 2006 Annual Conference that was held on May 17, 2006 at the New Otani Hotel and Garden was attended by close to 150 members. It was a whole day seminar and CPE credits were given to attendees who required them. The sessions started at 7:45 am with registration and continental breakfast.

The conference was divided into morning and afternoon sessions with the following order of presentors:

• Mr. Jim Godsey, Partner at Macias, Gini & Co. LLP. He spoke on Accounting and Auditing Updates
• Mr. Nam Huynh, Director of Systems at the Office of the Controller who spoke on the Updates on the Payroll System Replacement (PAYSR) Project
• Mr. Bill Lamb, Director of Financial Analysis & Reporting, Office of the Controller who spoke on the FMIS Replacement Update
• Ms. Vicky Santiago, Chief Accountant, Treasury Department who spoke on the Role of Treasury Accounting in the City's Financial Reporting
• Mr. Ed Monteiro, CFA, Financial Analyst at LAWA spoke about Understanding the Tax Rules for Investing Your Savings
• Mr. Rashad Mfume, Director of Systems, Public Works who spoke on MERLIN: Update and Demonstration
• Ms. Lee Ann Pelham, Executive Director of the City Ethics Commission who spoke on Public Service Ethics and Government Accountability
• Councilman Bernard Parks, Chair of the Budget & Finance Committee-EERC who spoke on the Role Accountants and Auditors Play in the Budget Process

WE ARE LOOKING FOR LEADERS

It is that time again! The Election committee is in search of members who are interested to lead the organization for FY 2006-2007. If you want challenge and have the desire to work with and for the LAMAAA members, then this is your chance to make a difference.

Nominations must be submitted to the Election Committee Chair Richard Heredia no later than May 12, 2006 and the voting will take place by June 1st, 2006.

The induction of new officers will be in July 2006 at the New Otani Hotel so mark your calendar and join us in welcoming the new leadership.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARD TO BE ANNOUNCED

LAMAAA is not only known to provide opportunities and benefits to its members via training seminars, but it has always been known to instill social consciousness in its members.

LAMAAA provides a scholarship grant to three deserving students who excel in academics and community involvement through volunteer work. LAMAAA’s objective is to help highly motivated, low income and/or self -supporting students in their pursuit of higher learning, self-advancement and self-discipline.

The Scholarship Committee Chair, Joe Gatchalian received several applications, which are now being reviewed. The award will be presented at the Induction of new officers.

LAMAAA MEMBERSHIP DRIVE IS ON

We all know that the success of an organization like ours depends on the participation and support of its members. LAMAAA has been in existence for more than forty years and it has always proven to perform beyond our expectation and more so,  beyond the $10 fee that it requires for membership.

Let us all show our support once again by renewing our membership this year. Please download and fill-out a membership form then submit it with your $10 fee to your Department Coordinator or directly to Marilu de Vera, Membership Committee Chairperson.
